Description

The map depicts the most important mountains in the entire Alpine region. First, the most geographically prominent mountains were selected: the map includes all Alpine peaks with a prominence of at least 500 meters. This comprises a total of 919 mountains and three peaks with similar elevations, including, for example, Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, the Grossglockner, and the Zugspitze. Since prominence assesses a mountain within the context of its surroundings, this approach ensures a good distribution across the Alps. However, our perception of the mountains is not solely determined by geography, but also by their shape, rock type, and the views they offer. Therefore, we have additionally selected 79 special Alpine peaks that, despite their lower prominence, possess particular significance and shape the landscape. A few examples are the Eiger, the Grosser Mythen, and the Hohe Weisse. The selection of these peaks is, by its very nature, somewhat subjective – but even here, we ensured that our selection covers the entire Alpine region. Twenty special hiking trails in the Alps complete the map. To select the trails, we focused on popularity, regional distribution, and length to present a wide range of hiking routes. A detailed elevation profile is provided for all 20 trails. The new 2025 edition also includes the updated Via Alpina and the Slovenian long-distance hiking trail Slovenska Planinska Pot.
